The Oxnard Firefighters Foundation is partnering with the Oxnard Fire Department, the Oxnard Police Department and the California Office of Traffic and Safety (OTS) to provide child bicycle helmets to the residents of Oxnard.  As your first responders we see many injuries that are the direct outcome of not wearing bicycle helmets.

In 2014 the Oxnard Firefighter Foundation  was awarded a California Office of Traffic and Safety (OTS) grant that will help us to provide bicycle helmets to children and teens in need. The mission of the California Office of Traffic and Safety (OTS) is to effectively and efficiently administer traffic safety grant funds to reduce traffic deaths, injuries, and economic losses. The Oxnard Firefighters Foundation is excited to partner with the California Office of Traffic and Safety (OTS) to help bring this program to the residents of Oxnard..

In 2015 the residents of Oxnard will have the opportunity to attend multiple bicycle safety events. Theses events include multiple events educating children about bicycle safety, the importance of wearing a helmet.

A person under the age of 18 years old must wear a helmet whenever they do anything on wheels. This includes roller or inline skates, non-motorized scooters, skateboards, as well as bicycles.

It cannot be just any old helmet, either. It must be fastened and securely fitted, and meet The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards. This also applies to children in a restraining seat that is attached to a bicycle or in a trailer that is towed by a bicycle. If your child doesn't wear a helmet, you can be fined up to $25.

Motorcycle drivers and passengers of any age must wear an approved safety helmet when riding on a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, motorized bicycle, or motorized scooter.
